Challenges of the Seine-Scheldt Project

....................................................................................................................................................

As a beacon project for inland waterway navigation in Europe, Seine-Scheldt aims to provide the European Union with a truly inter-connected network of large-gauge navigable waterways.

In light of this master objective, and all through its implementation, the Project has to address a number of very specific issues. The economic and touristic development of regions involved, or the protection of the environment and natural resources are all challenges of the highest importance, which the Project must and will meet successfully. In this effort, the Seine-Scheldt Committee and the technical teams of the Project's national partners constantly join forces in order to find operational, viable and sustainable solutions.

In the following sections, you will find an extensive overview of the most important issues and challenges facing the Project, ranging from the economic development of crossed territories to the definition of intermodal solutions, or from respecting the environment to promoting touristic opportunities all along the course of the Project.

Inland waterways are a privileged means of ensuring a better penetration of international trade flows towards the interior
and can contribute to create a stronger momentum for growth between European seaports and their hinterland.
